SCALING UP IN FRAGILE STATES

The Scaling-Up in Fragile States Working Group began in May 2016 and includes over 50 professionals from bilateral donors, multilateral institutions, universities, think tanks, business and non-governmental aid agencies. The Group serves as a platform for thought leadership and dialogue on scaling-up in fragile states, as well as a repository of research, policy reports and other resources that inform scaling in difficult contexts.  Additionally, the Group serves as a sounding board for members to share challenges and assess opportunities around specific initiatives–wherever they are in the scaling process.  Group members may invite their partners and affiliates to participate in a session and benefit from the Group’s input on their scaling initiatives in fragile contexts.

The Working Group’s scope of inquiry involves:

  • (a) applying scaling-up approaches to bridge the nexus between humanitarian, peace and development interventions;
  • (b) elaborating on the obstacles to scaling in fragile states and how they have been overcome, or when scaling should not have been attempted;
  • (c) promoting adaptive, resilient and politically-smart methods for scaling;
  • (d) examining ways to strengthen country institutions and mobilize private sector finance for durable scaling in a range of fragile contexts;

The Group looks for opportunities to stimulate wider discussions across the Community of Practice in an effort to promote scalable solutions in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals and Leave No One Behind agenda.
