This session discusses the topics of climate change, action, and finance. In this session panelists answer questions about their work and how scaling and finance intertwine with climate action. At the end, the panelists joined in a group discussion to connect their views on future steps for the climate change working group.

The topics of this session include:

  • The centrality of investment: the need to accelerate investment to meet climate goals and replace aging capital
  • Innovation and technology: how to utilize green technologies for a greater-scale impact
  • Policy: the need to coordinate for better results and more effective climate action
  • Collaboration/coordination/platforms: How to utilize the community, the largest group of stakeholders including the individual, businesses, organizations, and governments)
  • How the rising prioritization of climate action has changed the pace of its impacts on stages such as at COP and G7.

George Zedgenidze, with the Green Climate Fund, introduced Amar Bhattacharya, with the Brookings Institution, to moderate the session. Panelists answered a variety of questions to begin the discussion. Vera Songwe with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, discussed the findings of her report on climate finance and from that perspective, how the scaling up of climate finance looks. Yannick Glemarec talked about lessons he has taken away from the Green Climate Fund’s solution set; Andrew Steer discussed the approach he is taking, along with the Bezos Earth Fund, in terms of the impact of the financing his organization receives and what it implies in terms of scaling.
