Lennart Woltering

Fellow – Global Evergreening Alliance; International Sustainability Transitions Network

Agriculture & Rural Development Working Group Co-Chair

Lennart Woltering is a recognized expert in scaling and systems change within smallholder agri-food systems in the Global South. He has published extensively on the science of scaling and created the Scaling Scan (www.scalingscan.org) tool to make scaling lessons widely accessible. He advocates for a shift in mindset around scaling from “reaching many” to include sustainability, responsibility and systems change. Beyond CIMMYT and the CGIAR, Lennart advises a range of development organizations, alliances and donors on scaling strategies.

With 20 years of experience in agricultural development, research, and the private sector, Lennart is also an entrepreneur. He was a key member of the GIZ/CGIAR Task Force on Scaling and is a fellow of both the Global Evergreening Alliance and the International Sustainability Transitions Network. Additionally, he co-chairs the Agriculture and Rural Development working group of the International Community of Practice on Scaling. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, focusing on the barriers and opportunities for Agricultural Research for Development organizations to adopt a systems approach to scaling. He is based in Arusha, Tanzania, where he works on the digital transformation in public breeding for the Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT.
